L. Ron Hubbard Scientology Electrometer Mark V w/ Instruction Booklet

£250.00

“The human body is not such a good conductor and the E-Meter has been specifically designed by L. Ron Hubbard to measure the large and minute changes in the electrical resistance of a human body”

From the instruction booklet of how to set up the meter etc.

(See photos)

As for the meter, I’ve not been able to test, but it looks like it’s been well taken care of and, going by the sticker attached, it had a service on 16/1/2024, so chances are it’s good.

It’s quite a thing to experience.

Just the name L. Ron Hubbard is enough to send shivers and the writing on the meter “For use in Scientology” give it that extra chill.

Perhaps so, because I don’t know much of anything about the belief really, and then again perhaps it is a benign and even possibly wondrous invention, which really does help people.

Either way, this kit is something special to behold.

More info

Whereas the book described in the link above is the 1983 version with 47 pages, the one we have here in this set is the original 58-page one from 1966.

As for the meter itself…

A “vintage Scientology Electrometer,” or E-Meter, is a device developed by L. Ron Hubbard to measure galvanic skin response, similar to a lie detector, to guide Scientology auditing sessions. These early models are now sought after as collectibles or for their cultural and religious significance, as they are not considered medically useful by a 1974 US federal court order. The device operates by measuring the electrical resistance in the static field surrounding the body as a small current is passed through the subject’s hands via electrode cans.

Function and History
  • Purpose:

The E-Meter is designed to measure changes in the user’s electrical resistance, known as galvanic skin response, which is linked to the sympathetic nervous system.

  • Development:

    L. Ron Hubbard developed the E-Meter in the late 1950s or early 1960s, adapting technology from early lie detectors.

  • Controversy:

The device was the subject of litigation, leading to a 1974 US federal court order mandating a disclaimer that it is not medically or scientifically useful.

Operation
  • Components:

A typical E-Meter includes a meter with dials, an auditor-controlled sensitivity knob, and handheld electrodes called “cans”.

  • Process:

During a Scientology auditing session, a person holds the cans, and the auditor asks questions. The E-Meter measures the electrical resistance to a small current passed through the cans.

  • Interpretation:

The meter’s dial (or needle) responds to changes in the subject’s skin resistance. Its movement is intended to indicate what the person is thinking or feeling, providing a focal point for conversation.

Vintage Models
  • Collecting:

Vintage E-Meters, such as the Hubbard Electrometer or American Mark V models, are sold as collectibles on platforms like eBay and Etsy.

  • Status:

Some vintage E-Meters are sold for display purposes only, not for working use.

  • Cultural Significance:
They hold cultural and religious interest as a foundational piece of Scientology’s practice and history.”
