Plus, it is fun to play;-

Aunt Sally was originally a 17th-century game of tossing sticks to break clay pipes from a wooden head, but by the early 20th century, a smaller, commercially produced Parlour Aunt Sally became a quoits or rings game, where players threw objects to knock a single pipe off the doll’s face. This indoor version avoided the dangerous flying sticks and broken clay from its fairground counterpart, making it suitable for drawing rooms.

Key aspects of Aunt Sally in the early 20th century:

  • Parlour vs. Fairground:
While the fairground version continued, the early 20th century saw the rise of Parlour Aunt Sally, a smaller, safer version of the game.
  • Different Gameplay:
Unlike the outdoor game where players hurled sticks at a figure with multiple pipes, the Parlour Aunt Sally involved a rings or quoits-like game, with players aiming to knock a single pipe from the doll’s mouth.
  • Targeted Design:
The Parlour version featured a smaller doll, designed specifically for indoor use where flying sticks or scattered clay pipe fragments were undesirable.
  • Commercial Production:
This indoor variant was a commercially manufactured game at the time.
Evolution of the Game:
  • 17th Century Origins:

The game can be traced back to the 17th century as an outdoor fairground activity.

  • Fairground Style:

In its early form, players threw sticks at a wooden head with clay pipes in its mouth, aiming to break the pipes.

  • Transition to Pubs:

The game eventually moved from fairs to pubs, where it was more formally organized and led to the creation of leagues, a development similar to darts.

  • Modern Game:
Today, the most common form of Aunt Sally involves knocking a skittle (the “doll”) off a swivel on a post, a simplified version of the older games.
